Pilates, Golf and Tennis (or Pickleball)

Can you smell the greens? Maybe you have already been out on the course three or four times. How about your racquet, have you missed swinging it during the winter months? Now, the season is here to do all things outdoors.

Recently myself and another instructor watched a workshop all about golf and racquet ball sports and Pilates*. First, I have to tell you that golf, tennis and pickleball are way harder than they appear. (You are probably thinking, “duh!”) When I watch professionals or anyone else playing these sports, they make it look so effortless. The details to each swing, how you stand and your mental position have to all align to create the perfect shot. Kudos to you if you play any one or all of these sports.

How can Pilates help you with these rotational and racquet ball sports? Pilates offers a wide range of exercises on the mat and reformer to assist with injury prevention, core training, balance, coordination, motor control, and breath. (Pilates is a good match with any sport!) If we look at Golf and racquet ball specifically, Pilates is a wonderful way to strengthen and mobilize the forearms, the shoulders, spine, ankles and a chance to create better grip strength. Even if you are not a professional golfer and/or tennis player, we can sprinkle in exercises to help improve your game. At the Studio on Third, we are here to give you what you need.

Exercises that you can do at home on your mat include, bird dog to build your core and balance, leg circles to improve hip mobility, plank and side plane to improve core, shoulder and wrist strength and swan to open up your chest And, don’t forget to stretch out your forearms with simple stretches. Simply, bring your arms and hands in front of you at shoulder height, point your fingers up to the ceiling (imagine that you are pushing against a wall), and then point your fingers towards the floor without moving your arms. Simple but effective! Interested in learning more and showing off to your friends? Contact The Studio on Third, or book a class online
